1121 vs. 1509 vs. 1718 Basmati: Which Grade Fits Your Order?

Three varieties, three very different buying decisions. Here's how grain length, maturity cycle, and pricing actually break down — and which one fits a first-time importer vs. a recurring weekly order.

Every buyer who calls us asking for "Basmati" eventually gets asked the same question back: which one? India's export basket doesn't have a single Basmati — it has a family of varieties, each bred for a different balance of grain length, aroma, yield, and price. Getting this choice right before you place an order saves a renegotiation later.

1121 — The Benchmark

1121 is what most international buyers picture when they say "Basmati." It has the longest post-cooking elongation of any commercial variety — grains that stretch dramatically once cooked, which is exactly what premium retail and foodservice buyers are paying for. It's also the most widely available variety, which means consistent supply but also the most price competition among suppliers.

If you're a first-time importer and unsure what to specify, 1121 is the safest default. It's the variety your competitors are almost certainly already selling.

1509 — Built for Frequency

1509 matures faster than 1121 in the field, which shortens the gap between harvest and shipment. For buyers running recurring orders — weekly or biweekly containers rather than one-off purchases — that shorter cycle means more consistent availability and less exposure to seasonal price spikes near harvest windows.

The grain is slightly shorter than 1121, but the aroma profile is comparable. We're currently quoting 1509 for a UAE-based importer running a 2–3 container/week order precisely because of this supply rhythm advantage.

1718 — The Value Upgrade

1718 is a newer, improved version of 1121 — bred specifically for resistance to bacterial blight, a disease that has periodically squeezed 1121 yields and pushed up prices. Because 1718 yields more reliably, it's often priced more competitively than 1121 while delivering comparable grain quality and aroma.

Fewer buyers currently specify 1718 by name, which is exactly the opportunity: it's an easy way to hold quality while improving your landed cost.
